or someone visiting Thaxted, The Gate Cottage has everything you may need on it’s doorstep.  Directly opposite is a grand church, completed in 1510, which has been described as the finest parish church in the country.

 

Every year, Thaxted hosts a spectacular live classical music festival over the course of 2 weeks in the church and The Gate Cottage provides the best possible vantage point in the town.

 

Thaxted also has a rich tradition of Morris Dancing and every year hosts the Thaxted Morris Weekend, when troups from far and wide come to dance and entertain the public in the closed streets of Thaxted.  The Celebrations usually go on late into the evening, and The Gate Cottage is ideally located for experiencing all the festivities. 

 

There is a Friday Market which takes place opposite the Guildhall, another of Thaxted’s magnificent historical buildings, and several shops, cafes and pubs to stop for a drink and food.

 

Just beyond the historic Alms Houses sits John Webb’s Windmill which is the gateway to many incredible country walks accessible from Thaxted.

 

There is a regular bus service from the centre of Thaxted directly to Stansted Airport for those needing to catch a flight and several surrounding towns like Saffron Walden (7 miles) and Dunmow (6 miles) for more shopping and food options.  Thaxted is the jewel in the crown of Essex and The Gate Cottage provides a prime location from which to enjoy it.
